Today in Religion – March to the Sea

march to the sea

General Sherman conquers Savannah, Georgia in 1864 during the famous march to the sea.

General William Sherman attended the United States Military Academy. After graduation, he served in the army but did not see much combat. Eventually, he resigned and worked in banking and law before being the superintendent of the military academy he had once attended. Then the civil war started and he resigned again to go join the Union forces.

In 1864, after conquering Atlanta, Georgia, Sherman started his famous march to the sea. He explained his plan as a way to not only cut off important supplies for the southern forces but also lower their morale. He wanted to make life uncomfortable for the south. In this way, he fought physically and psychologically, a total war. This move helped in the defeat of the south.
