John Hetherington of London wore the first top hat in 1797.

We all know the look of a top hat. They have been popular formal wear for years. Yet, in 1797 when Hetherington wore the first top hat, the police arrested him. It seems wearing this hat caused a riot. According to the newspapers, children screamed, women fainted, and dogs barked.

John Hetherington worked as a haberdasher or a seller of men’s clothing and accessories. It seems he designed this hat. This hat grew in popularity until Prince Albert wore it in 1850 and everyone wanted one. Now, this hat stands for high formality.
