Secret Message Sent to Mars

PBS News Hour tells about “Mars rover’s giant parachute carried secret message.” When scientists decided to send the rover to Mars, they added some fun. They allowed people to send their names. Now we find out that systems engineer, Ian Clark, added a message using the binary code. He came up with this idea when the engineers wanted to do a unique design in the parachute to tell orientation. Clark thought it would be fun to turn it into a secret message too.

He kept the message simple and teased about it with the pictures sent back. A few hours later space fans figured out the message said “Dare Mighty Things”, a quote from President Theodore Roosevelt. Clark says next time he will have to make it a more difficult code.
