The first sports team to do something for St. Patrick’s day happened in 1971. The Miami Floridians Basketball team changed their names to something more Irish sounding. They all put an o in front of it, so Calvin turned to O’Calvin or Harge to O’Harge.
Sadly, it took another seven years before another sports team decided to do something special for St. Patrick’s. In 1978, the baseball team the Cincinnati Reds walked into their lockers to find that their uniforms had changed colors. That day the Reds wore green. This tradition has continued as other sports teams have started wearing green for games held on St. Patrick’s day.
