In 1519 Martin Luther and Karl von Miltitz met together.
Pope Leo X sent Karl von Miltitz as his ambassador to Germany. The pope wanted Miltitz to express the pope’s support of Frederick the Wise for the emperor. He also wanted Miltitz to reach an agreement with Martin Luther. Martin Luther spoke out vocally against the practice of making money off of indulgences. The Catholics used indulgences as a way to mitigate punishment for sin. Some priests used this practice to gain riches.
Luther and Miltitz met in Altenburg. As Luther had not actually completed a previous agreement, Miltitz focused on silencing Luther. He proposed that Luther stop speaking about indulgences if the priests also quit discussing the subject. Luther agreed. This agreement did not last long.
