In 1860, Rabbi Morris Raphall offered the opening prayer for the House of Representatives to choose the Speaker of the House.

From the beginning, Congress opened with a prayer. Sometimes they invited guest religious leaders to offer that prayer. In 1860, they invited Rabbi Morris Raphall to offer the prayer before they chose the Speaker of the House. He was the first Jewish rabbi to offer the prayer in Congress.
